The Cuíca – High Pitched Brazillian Friction Drum

Despite it’s East / African origin the Cuíca has become a genuine instrument in Brazil.

As part of samba schools from the 1930’s the Cuíca is present in various aspects of Brazilian music and became a tool with features typical of Brazil. It’s execution combines technical, swing and has a unique sound.

Two cuícas of distinct sounds were sampled. The Cuíca was played by the great Brazilian percussionist Luciano “Cuíca Play” (Simoninha / G.R.E.S. São Clemente – Rio de Janeiro).

The library has four different Pandeiros produced by two major Brazilian Luthiers; Warley Dyorman and Jose Augusto.

Each Pandeiro has different components, two of them were handmade with platinum and worked in bronze.

Each Pandeiro has more than 20 dynamics and 80 different samples in the Round Robin every detail has been captured offering maximum dynamics. The rhythm section has variations in Brazilian styles and delivers more than 200 loops carefully prepared to be used in any musical project. Each Loop preserves the musical performance and swing while maintaining the beat.

Made with goat’s leather or synthetic (plastic) the larger Surdo with a deeper sound has roughly 75cm (29,5 inches) in diameter and the smaller around 40 cm ( 16 inches) with a higher pitch.

The Tamborim – Brazilian Frame Drum (Wooden & Plastic)

Very common in Brazilian music, The Tamborim reveals much of the percussive wealth of Brazil and it’s rich musical history.

The instrument is normally very tightly tuned in order to ensure a high, sharp timbre and a minimum sustain, giving it that quick percussive sound.

Used mainly by “samba schools” (Escolas de Samba) of Rio de Janeiro and traditional Sambas, this instrument represents much of the typical rhythm of Brazilian music.

Two sticks were used when recording the library: a traditional wooden stick and a plastic five stick used in samba schools.

The samples have more than 10 dynamic notes, ghost notes, hoops and characteristic Brazilian rhythms.

  • Brazillian Rhythms
  • Tamborim

The traditional Timbal is 14 inches in width and 35 inches in height. The instrument has rich harmonics and has great rhythmic power.

Very popular with musical genres such as Axé and Pagode. Currently the instrument is also used in other genres in Brazilian music.

The Glass Marimba has a mysterious crystal-like sound that differs from a normal wooden marimba. Its a very unusual instrument that has a unique and distinct sound.

Two types of sticks were used when recording the library in order to diversify the textures and tones of the marimba. The library also explores chords, motifs and grooves to fully use in songs.

Two kinds of sticks were used. The first has a velvety sound and a smooth attack and the second brings a brighter sound with more presence.

There are no extended samples, each note has 8 velocities and all of them were separately sampled. More tone and performance.
