The Ultimate Collection of Classic Synth Patches!

Bloq assembles a wide array of synths from Sharooz’s personal collection, recorded through Neve, Focusrite, and Empirical Labs processing.

The instruments range from the Roland Jupiter-6 and 8 to the Sequential Circuits Pro One, and also includes modern products such as the DSI Prophet 08 and Elektron Analog Four. The library includes versions in Native Instruments Kontakt 5, Ableton Live, and Logic EXS and Ultrabeat formats.

In Synth mode the main Graphic User Interface (GUI) is presented. This is where the most commonly used controls are.

You can select patches by clicking buttons either side of the patch display to cycle back or forth through patches. Clicking on the patch display will reveal a drop down menu that allows all presets to be browsed and a selection to be made.

Each sound can be thickened by detuning and balancing two unison voices and then modulated with tremolo, auto-pan and pitch-modulation.

Further voice shaping is done using a line of filter and envelope sliders and there are three LFOs that can be used to drive the modulators and certain filter parameters.

At the foot of the interface is the processor section, fitted with a compressor, EQ and tape simulator. There are send effects too (a phaser, chrous, delay and reverb).

And The Beat Goes On With These Vintage Drum Machines!

On the percussion side “Bloq” covers a lot of ground in it’s 22 classic drum machines, including classics like the TR-808, TR-909 and TB-303 as well as  more obscure gems like the Sequential Circuits Drumtraks and the MXR 185.

The Bloq drum machine’s interface also includes a compressor, EQ, tape emulator, delay and reverb and has a set of eight virtual drum pads.

The eight pads play the respective sounds within a given kit  and can also be triggered using the keyboard keys C1 to Bb1. Each voice can be soloed or muted using the S and M buttons to the left of the pad, while clicking the display above the pad allows any sound to be selected within any kit.

The Learn button allows each pad to be assigned to a key of your choice, simply click Learn and press the key to which you wish the currently edited voice/pad to be assigned. The sampler mode can be toggled between Modern and Vintage sampler mode, which replicates a 12-bit drum sampler such as the Akai MPC 60 or Emu SP-1200.

With filter and envelope tools, transposition, and the ability to easily create hybrid kits with drums from multiple sources Bloq Drums offers plenty of flexibility, including allowing each pad to be individually treated with transient shaping, ADSR, HPF and LPF filters, FX sends, tuning and the ability to assign each hit to up to 16 separate outputs.

For Logic users, the drums are assembled into a collection of Ultrabeat kits, with all of its integrated features available for tweaks and touch-ups. As for Ableton, each machine is collected into its own massive drum rack, with oodles of smartly designed macros.

A Sequence(r) of Cool Events!

Both the synthesizer and drum machine have a 32-step sequencer with tools for modifying the pitch, length, octave and accent of each step, however, the synthesizer’s sequencer adds a chord function with a row of dials that modify how the chords are played, while each of the drum machine’s eight sounds have their own channels.

The 32-step sequencer layout has 32 faders representing the pitch of each step. These can be pulled up and down to adjust by semitone increments. Clicking and dragging the step numbers above the faders can increase or decrease the number of steps from 1 – 32. The yellow fader below the numerical value display adjusts the pitch of the velocity of the sequence step, toggling between three modes – Off, Unaccented and Accented.

The sequencer can store up to 8 Patterns by simply clicking on the relevant Sequence button and these can be synced to the host tempo of your DAW by clicking the green/red switch. The sequence rate can be toggled between 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 speeds. The 4 knobs function as follows

  • Free – Increases the non-synchronized speed of the sequencer.
  • Accent – Increases the volume of the Accented Steps.
  • Swing – Increases the shuffle/swing of the sequencer.
  • Chord – See Chord Mode below

Chord Mode

Bloq Synth also makes use of Kontakt’s extensive chord memory functionality. Chord mode is set up by adjusting the Play Mode to Chord in the Synth menu and the chord shapes are adjusted in the Sequencer menu. The chord type can be varied using the Chord knob or clicking and dragging the Chord display.
