Combine Up To Four Sound Sources To Create Endlessly Evolving Textures!
An Overview Of “Motion”
MOTION is divided into four categories:
FD = Field Recordings (15 samples)
KY = Reverberated Keys (22 samples)
PD = Tonal Pads (48 samples)
SC = Soundscapes (35 samples)
- All Field Recordings can be stretched to their extreme, to create organic atmospheres.
- All Keys are designed as an add-on voice, with long reverberated sounds.
- All Pads are tonal, so you can play chords and melodies with them.
- All Soundscapes are made with musical intervals, (nearly) no noise weirdness here.
All samples are seamlessly looping for infinite, evolving, sustained sounds. An INIT blank patch is available out of the two folders above.
The Main Page
On the main page interface you can select the samples, with a menu list clearly divided into the four categories above. You can also use the Randomise function which will randomise everything giving you instant results and making for an endless exploration playground.
You can also create your own Multi sounds, combining all existing patches, since they match with each other quite well.
Some performance guidelines:
- You need to use the Mod Wheel for all modulations and X/Y movements to start.
- If you are looking for plain, tonal sounds, you simply can explore the default patches programs.
- If you are after modern, complex sounds, always try the Mod Wheel.
The Movement Page
This page controls the way in which the four sounds chosen on the Main page morph between each other, there are three parameters with a set of common controls:
- Horizontal – Speed, Depth and Smooth controls
- Vertical – Speed, Depth and Smooth controls
- Circular – Speed, Depth and Smooth controls
All of these parameters also have independent options for Sync (to your DAWs internal tempo) and Retrigger.
Customise Your Sounds With Extensive Modulation Options & Effects!
The Modulation Page
This is where you can add extra movement and interest to your sounds by assigning Pan, Tuning, Resonance, Drive, Cutoff etc to LFO’s and Envelopes. There are four of each of these and they come with the following modification options:
- LFOs 1 to 4 – Rate, Fade-in and Type
- Envelope 1 to 4 – Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release (ADSR)
The Effects Page
Choose from a large selection of effects to add that finishing touch to your sound, options include:
- Chorus – includes controls for Speed, Depth and Wet/Dry
- Distort – includes controls for Drive and Damping
- Lo-Fi – includes controls for Sample Rate and Bitcrush
- Delay – includes controls for Rate, Length, Pan and Wet/Dry
- Filter – includes controls for Cutoff, Resonance and Type
- Spatial – includes controls for Width and Pan
- Convolution Reverb – includes controls for Pre-delay, Hi Pass, Low Pass, Length, Dry and Wet. Plus a drop-down menu to choose Reverb Type

Stan – :
I have to give Motion the full amount of stars because of the ease of use and the ease of producing a mind-boggling amount of new sound combinations and variations within any already selected/generated patch—and also because it’s loaded with sounds curated by Soundethers. This GUI/Engine is starting to be used by a cohort of accomplished developers (e.g., see Elixer from Beautiful Void Audio, also on sale here), presumably in lieu of the PhotoSynthesis Engine (which they also used very well). It doesn’t have the arpeggiation or the efx key-switching of PhotoSynthesis; It does have easier layering, quicker access to parameters for each layer, a fourth layer, an internally/externally animated or directly mouse-manipulated XY-pad with a movable start position (also acts as a static master blend for layers), sample start, and randomization features that seem to produce usable results much more often than not. In addition to being able randomly select a voice, you can use the “Randomize All” button to randomly change all the settings ONLY on the page/tab you are currently viewing, an approach which seems to work well for manageable and useful results.
Different developers are obviously tweaking the scripting for this GUI, and here are some performance and approach differences between Motion and Elixer:
(1) The controls on the Movement Page of Elixer do not randomize; Motion’s do randomize
(2) Motion ships with only nki; Elixer comes with snapshots for categorized sets of nki
(3) Elixer has a whole set of “reversed” nki, Motion does not—but Motion will allow you to quickly accomplish the same thing for any nki by simply clicking on the spanner (monkey wrench) and selecting/illuminating the immediately displayed <–Reverse button. This simple move does not disable or lock out the GUI, and it reverses the sample sweep (generally but not always from a re-selected sample start).
To summarize: At least a lifetime of sound production possibilities, nice features, quick and easy and enjoyable to use, Soundethers samples, bargain priced, and a 50% deal from APD.
