Creatively Sampled Six-Stringed Baroque Instrument For Full Kontakt
The Viola Da Gamba is a six-stringed baroque instrument. It’s similar in size to the Cello, but has a slightly different shape, uses frets, and is tuned in 4ths. It is strung with synthetic gut strings, which give it a strident, husky sound.
The Gamba’s earthy tones can provide a rustic alternative to the classical string sound. This is one of only a handful of other baroque virtual instruments recorded.

How Does Viola Da Gamba Work?
Ben Osterhouse’s “Viola Da Gamba” library is presented in two forms: Gamba Articulations and Gamba Rhythms – split into 2 nki’s:
NKI 1 – 12 Articulations
- Long Bow
- Trills
- Staccato
- Endless Bow
- Turns
- Ricochet
- Scratch
- Short
- Pizzicato
- Tremolo
- Swell
- Rough
All of the different articulations can be easily layered together within a single interface.
NKI 2 – Small Rhythmic Figures
These have been designed to fit together to create natural sounding ostinato patterns.
Each of the rhythmic figures can be accessed either by using key switches or using a unique interface which allows you to visually arrange the figures into a sequence.
Each rhythmic figure is recorded as a 4-bar loop, and the musical emphasis is given to downbeats and upbeats. This gives a natural ebb and flow to any ostinato pattern created with the Gamba.
It has a three-octave range from C36 (2 octaves below middle C) up to C72 (an octave above middle C).
If you are looking for organic, rustic Viola Da Gamba textures, this instrument is for you!

Craig – :
I have a few of Ben’s other libraries but I think this is my favorite now. Nice sound and well programmed.
L – :
Being an owner of many of Ben Osterhouse’s products. There is no doubt that his instruments are made with love, and I hear that in the quality they give time and time again. Viola Da Gamba [as with all of his instruments] are very user friendly indeed and are an amazing asset that makes the suite of instruments a joy to use and essential in my stringed instruments arsenal
David – :
Really beautiful library. Ben Osterhouse always makes high quality stuff and this is no exception. Easy to learn/use, wonderful sounding, and HUMAN. This library (and many others of Ben’s) can bring such a vulnerable humanity to a score.
Wouter – :
Was waiting for this discount for a long time. Ben always makes these instruments shine. These libraries give a unique sound. thanks!
Lluís – :
Amazing library! Great viola da gamba sound, easy to play and very useful! I recommend this library absolutely!
Matthew – :
Wow Ben Osterhouse’s instruments are no joke. This Viola Da Gamba is one of the coolest instruments out there and I highly recommend!
Theodore – :
Limited functionality and verisimilitude, but kind of fun to play with until the sound gets too grating compared to the real thing. Compare to the subtlety of the real instrument at, for instance, here on YouTube:

Ake – :
A very good sample library for the Viola Da Gamba. The sound is beautifully captured, rich and with full body. For the price of €19 it’s a must.
Claudio – :
Great library like everything Ben does, great quality and ease of use 10/10. The libraries of Ben give a unique sound.
Teh best!!!
Sheldon – :
I already have the Cinesample Viola Da Gamba library. After listening to the samples, I think Ben Osterhouse’s Viola Da Gamba offers something different and sounds ever better in some way, so decided to buy it.
Khalid – :
Hi.
Viola Da Gamba by Ben Osterhouse so beautiful especially at the range of the price, Highly recommended.
Guglielmo – :
The viola da gamba by Ben Osterhouse is a very good instrument, fun to play and it has a nice tone. Before purchasing it I compared it with other sampled viola da gamba video reviews and they all sounded quite mechanic and artificial, especially in their pizzicato patches, whilst this didn’t really happen with this instrument, that’s why I decided to buy it and I really like how it was made. Can it be improved? Of course, but that doesn’t mean it is not perfectly usable right now and overall its sound is enough convincing if well programmed.
Johan Anders – :
So good. Anything Ben Osterhouse touches turns to gold. This library is no different. Quick delivery of the serials and a seemless download via Pulse.
Hristo – :
Absolutely great pack. Thank you Ben Osterhouse and thank you VSTbuzz. Many options to play with the sound. The rhythm articulations are very interesting too.
Craig – :
Bought other Ben Osterhouse libs. This is just as good as -maybe better than Cinesample’s Da Gamba. Has rhythmic version over Cine. Like the layering and articulations chosen.
Chris – :
A good selection of articulations and very playable as well as programmable. Priced reasonably. Sound quality is also great and can be tweaked to taste.
Peter – :
Once again an awesome instrument by Ben Osterhouse. I love the creativity and the uniqueness of the sound. Looking forward to using it.
Laurent – :
As always, Ben Osterhouse products are TOP!
This one is easy to use and the pattern section is cool.
Kurt – :
Great sound and wildly useful in a wide array of settings.
I especially find the “SWELL” and “TREMOLO” patches especially useful for ambient passages…
Alex – :
Beautifully sampled and scripted, adds a nice Baroque flavour that my other string libraries are lacking. The Rhythmic Fragments NKI makes putting ostinatos together an absolute breeze, and the Articulations NKI includes both highly playable artics and more textural patches that are great for layering.
Ben Osterhouse has been on my radar for a while. This is my first library of his, it definitely won’t be my last.
Joseph – :
this is an excellent sounding app if you want a husky string sounding instrument. ben osterhouse is a talent.
Rüdiger – :
The sound is stunning good. The shorter articulations didn’t have velocity dependent layers, that is the only thing that misses. The rhythm patches are fun and practically good to bring in.
Raymond – :
This is a fantastic vst!! I also have the Cinesamples Viola da Gamba, but this one immediately sounded and “felt” much more realistic. I was able to immediately introduce it into a singer-songwriter production I was working on. It also paired well with the Tina Guo cello. This is NOT just for Baroque music! It sounds more realistic than some cello libraries I’ve paid MUCH more for, and it could easily sit well amidst other strings/quartet libraries. I’m so glad I didn’t sleep on this one. Definitely a win!
Mark – :
Wish I’d discovered Ben Osterhouse sooner!!! After getting a great deal on Viola da Gamba I’ll certainly be purchasing more of his libraries.
Atte – :
Second Ben Osterhouse library I’ve got, wont be the last. What it does it does very well. Good price.
Suny – :
Easy to use, sounds great, lots of possibilities between articulations and rhythms. Compatible with Kontakt 5 (contains nki for Kontakt 6 as well). As I haven’t upgraded my Kontakt 5 yet, I’m happy to be able to use it. It’s not the first time I was eyeing Ben’s products, will definitely get others too!
Ondrej – :
Not bad, but mostly for experimental use – for “ordinary” tasks it is maybe not the right choice. Viola da Gamba in Rinascimento library (by Fluffy Audio) which is bundled with another 37 rennaisance and medieval instruments there, is a better one. Or the one in UVIs World Suite 2 library (in this bundle there is even more instruments).
