How Does Oscillation Strings Work?
Instruments
For all of the articulations, you can choose between violin, viola, cello, or bass. Everything has been recorded dry, close-mic’d, and is doubled (two instances layered together). It’s easy to achieve realistic chamber strings sound this way.
Two Different Types Of Legato Samples
Note Change shifts land decisively as a bow change happens during the note-change. Portamento shifts provide a more gliss-y and romantic note-change.
Purge Unused Samples
If all the samples are loaded at once, it takes up a hefty chunk of memory! To lighten the load, there are options to purge (unload from RAM) unused Rhythms, unused Swells, or and/or unused Instruments.
Rhythms
- Energetic eighth notes
- Medium quarter notes recorded at two different speeds: 90 and 120 bpm
- Broad, expressive half notes
- Double or Halve timestretching
Everything tempo-syncs, so if the project bpm is too fast or slow, samples may get overstretched and sound un-natural. The interface includes options to halve or double the speed of everything, to avoid this overstretching.
Swells/Custom Swells
Similar to a synth, Oscillation Strings has an attack and decay knob. What’s different is that each position in the knob triggers a whole different set of samples. This opens up a lot of phrasing possibilities.
If swells aren’t your thing, you can just switch over to “Expression” and use the modwheel to make your own phrasing.
Compression
The compression brings up the volume of the soft parts of the swell. They can be a bit dramatic, and it’s nice to be able to mellow them out. Because it’s compressing the sample for each individual note, it’s more natural sounding. You wouldn’t be able to get the same effect by just slapping a compressor on after Kontakt.
Polyphonic Legato
The legato in Oscillation Strings is one of the most unique features. Depending on where in the swell overlapping notes are played, a different legato sample will be chosen, and it’s sample offset, volume, length, and fade-in time are all automatically adjusted by the script to fit.
It’s easier to describe by showing, so check out the Oscillation Strings Legato in-depth video for a more detailed explanation of how this works.

"Oscillation Strings is one of the best boutique string libraries on the market. Focused on controllable string arcs, Oscillation Strings brings you both customizable string swells and polyphonic legato in an easy-to-use interface. More importantly though is the gorgeous tone of these deeply expressive strings. Oscillation Strings is one of the best string libraries I’ve played within the last year, period."

Wouter – :
Ben osterhouse is always amazing! Thanks for the deal! These instruments are always extremely good for underscore type of music, and deliver a “real” type of string sound.
KAZUNOBU – :
it is better than awesome.but not bad.
this is the best strings. BEN OSTERHOUSE OSCILLATIONSTRINGS.
yes i am
Dennis – :
A unique string library. It gives you other paths to expression. Swells are gorgeous. You can portamento slide into notes with great beauty. Really special.
Stanley – :
I’ve only had this library for a few days, but so far, it’s really impressive. The nuances available in the front-forward interface are excellent. It melds into so many scores easily. Another Osterhouse win!
Sheldon – :
One of the most organic strings library I ever got. This kind of ostinato strings is quite a niche library. But if you need this specific articulation in your arrangement, Ben has done a great job with it. The only criticism I got is the Portamento legato samples are a bit too loud sometimes. It will be great if the speed and volume of those samples can be adjusted in the GUI. All in all, a great library.
Murat – :
Very inspiring. Sounds very organic. Great library, thanks Ben Osterhouse. I believe I will have a good time with it.
Heiko – :
Great and inspiring software to work with! Just the right amount of parameters to get things going without loosing focus.
John – :
Sounds Great! I have almost all of Ben’s stuff and they are all special. Sounds intimate and real, and if used correctly does wonders.
Tom – :
Ben does some very unique and beautiful work. It’s great to have a musician do the programming in the library. The care shows up in the end result. Very intimate, and fills a gap in my string libraries collection. Wonderful work Ben!
A – :
Great organic sound, intuitive interface, all that good stuff. You may have string libraries, but they can’t make the same sounds as this, or at least nowhere near as easily.
nick – :
Oscillation Strings is one of those libraries that travels a great deal under the radar. It’s intimate and comprehensive in sound. Ben’s sampling method along with his signature less is more approach to GUI creation makes this an easy entry to my mock up template.
I particularly love the individual instrument capability and dry sample recordings which blend well with other string libraries.
Huge fan and supporter of Ben Osterhouse. He’s among the top independant instrument and sound creators in market today!
kris – :
Ben bringing the jewels, as usual. Don’t forget to turn on Legato mode though!
As with Ben’s other Kontakt patches, they don’t “do a lot,” but they do one thing very, very well and in the right hands you can get a lot of mileage out of them. Make sure to watch Ben’s demonstration video before purchasing and you’ll know if it’s something your need. Some composers and producers won’t want this and would be right to pass it up – meanwhile others will *need* this and probably will hunt down other patches by Ben Osterhouse soon after trying it for themselves.
Arnaud – :
At that price it was a no brainer. Oscillation Strings sounds really good and is perfect for intimate passages, may it’s used solo or blended with other libraries. I particularly love the legato transitions with either bow change or portamento articulations in between 2 chords. Lovely!
Troy – :
This is an awesome instrument! I’ve been playing around with it for a few days and enjoy thoroughly. The articulation is something that I don’t have in my other string libraries so, i appreciate the developer for filling in the gaps of my other instruments.
LEONID – :
Great multifunctional tool! I don’t do film music, but I will absolutely need it to create songs! I think I will use it often!
Grahame – :
Really good range at a great deal. I have quite a few of the Ben Osterhouse products and find the quality excellent.
Atte – :
Amazing library for the price. More versatile than I thought with simple easy to understand UI. Have no experience with other Ben Osterhouse libraries but will surely keep an eye on them.
Esteve – :
