Not Just Another Transient Designer…

A true one of a kind, “Transgressor 2” goes beyond the limits of standard transient designers. It gives you the ability to craft the sound of drums and other instruments not just in terms of attack and sustain, but timbrally as well.

The Transgressor combines a transient designer with two equalizers. No big deal you say? Any EQ plug-ins will do? Au contraire mon frère. Transgressor 2 not only lets you equalize the attack and sustain portions of the instrument’s envelope individually (yes, you read that right; attack can be equalized differently from sustain), but it also lets you dial in the specific low, mid, and high frequencies independently on each.

What if you need a brighter attack but want to keep the dark resonance of toms or kick drum? Perhaps you need more midrange attack but wish to brighten the resonance of a hi-hat? Perhaps you’re happy with the overall sound of snare but the attack is just a little too bright. The answer is the Transgressor 2 (you must have seen that coming). Only Transgressor 2 gives you the ability to control transients and sustain without compromising one for the other.

 Just the Facts:

  • Hybrid transient designer with two 3-band equalizers with selectable slopes
  • Gain controls let you boost or eliminate transients and sustain independently
  • Mix knob lets you adjust wet/dry signal
  • Adjustable transient detector lets you control sensitivity, eliminate false triggers from bleed
  • Internal or external sidechain control of detector
  • Sidechain EQ lets you dial in the frequencies that trigger the detector
  • Three sidechain modes with “listen” feature to monitor sidechain signal
  • Retrigger controls time between triggered events
  • A/B bank comparison
  • Factory presets to get you started

Unique Hybrid EQ & Transient Shaper!

The simplest way to explain what “Transgressor 2” does, is that it gives you separate EQ control over your transients and your sustained sounds. This gives you a level of control over your drums that you just cannot get through EQ or transient designers alone, and once you get a feel for how it works, it’s amazing how simple it is to use.

Whether you need to subtly enhance your drums, or completely overhaul the sound, Transgressor makes it quick and simple to do so!

The Controls

For quick reference, Transgressor provides a short description of each control when you hover your mouse over any knob or button. The descriptions below give you a more in depth understanding of what these controls do.

Header Bar

Presets – Transgressor comes equipped with its own preset menu. Presets are sharable across formats, computers and operating systems. This means that if you save a preset in your DAW in OSX, you can send that preset file to a friend who uses a different DAW on Windows and it will work exactly the same. For convenience, you can scroll through the presets by hitting the next/previous buttons.

A/B Bank – This lets you quickly compare different settings in the plugin without losing your knob settings. As you make changes to the knobs on the plugin, those changes are saved into whichever bank is selected. Switch banks to change all the values to what is stored in the other bank.

Lookahead – This causes the detector to look slightly into the future so that it can react to transients before they happen. A little bit of lookahead will make sure that small amounts of attack that happen before the big attack are also caught and considered transients.

Mix – This knob blends between your wet and dry signal.

Plugin Enable – This switch enables/bypasses the entire plugin. The plugin’s background will turn dark when it is disabled.

Transient Section

This section lets you control the sound of your transients. Your transients are the percussive parts of your sound. So the attack of your kick drum, the slap of your bass, or anything with a percussive element to it.

  • Transient Gain – Controls the volume of your transients. Turn it up for more extreme transients, turn it down for softer transients.
  • Transient Enable – This lets you turn on/off your transients altogether. This is especially helpful for muting your transients while dialing in your sustain tones.
  • Hold – This lets you set how long the transient will hold at full volume after it is triggered.
  • Release – This tells you how quickly the transient will fade out after the Hold has finished. This has a pretty huge effect on how your transients sound, so don’t ignore this one.
  • EQ – This 4 band Equalizer equalizes only the transient portion of your audio signal. The bands can be controlled by dragging the dots, or by adjusting the values in the bar below the EQ.
  • Transient EQ Presets – Beyond just giving you the ability to save presets for the entire plugin, you can save and recall presets for the transient EQ, without affecting any of your other settings.
  • Transient EQ Enable – This lets you bypass the transient EQ.

Sustain Section

This section lets you dial in the tone and level of your sustained sounds. This is great for having direct control over the sound of your tails and resonances. This is where you can bring out or reduce the ring in your snare, or the boom in your kick drum.

  • Sustain Gain – Controls the volume of your sustain. Turn it up for more louder sustains, or down on sustains and tails.
  • Sustain Enable – This lets you turn on/off your sustain altogether. This is especially helpful for muting your sustain while dialing in your transient tones.
  • Sustain EQ Section – This EQ has the same settings as the Transient EQ. The only difference is that this EQ is applied to the sustained sound, rather than the transient sound. This is where you can really dial in how you want your sustains to sound.

EQ Applications

Do you want to add bite to your snare without increasing the snare buzz? Transgressor is your go-to plug-in. Do you need to reduce the ringing in your snare without changing the tone? No worries!

Transient Detector Settings

These controls adjust how the transient detector will respond and trigger transients. Use these controls to prevent bleed from falsely triggering transients.

  • Sidechain Listen – This lets you monitor your sidechain signal, to help you dial in the settings.
  • Sidechain Source – This lets you set the sidechain to the detector to Internal, External, or MIDI.
  • Threshold – This controls the threshold to which the transient detector will trigger. When the transient goes above the threshold, it will trigger it on.
  • Hard/Soft – This switch lets you decide if transients under the threshold will be triggered or not.
  • Retrigger – This controls how much time must pass between triggered events. When set low, the detector will detect all transients, and may have some false triggers. If set high, the detector may not detect super fast passages.
  • Sidechain EQ – This is a simple sidechain filter that lets you dial in which frequencies will trigger the transient detector. This is handy for weeding out drum bleed and preventing false triggers. This filter only affects the detector, and not the tone of the processed sound.
  • Sidechain EQ Mode – This lets you choose whether you want the sidechain filter to be a Low Pass and High Pass filter, or a single bandpass filter with bandwidth control, or completely disabled.

What People Think About 70% off “Transgressor 2” by Boz Digital Labs

  • "Transgressor is an absolute beast to handle the shape of sounds. Having the ability to manipulate the attack and sustain so precisely is a game changer for me! You can go from soft to absolute chaos with this!"

  • "After trying a variety of different transient designers I definitely have a new favourite. I tried the first version but really didn’t get along with it. The new EQ section and the much better layout on version 2 really let you see what is going on and allow adjustments to easily be made. Props to Boz on this release."

  • "This immediately became my favorite transient processing tool. So creative, so much more powerful as a sound design tool than any alternative. Also the new UI is so much easier to use. Now if Big Beautiful Door gets a similar update, it’s going to be an insta-buy for me."

  • "This is a fantastic tool. You can, for instance, on toms, with the ‘remove stick attack’ preset, set the threshold so that soft hits keep the stick attack and sound nice and organic, and the attack on loud hits is de-emphasized so the drums sound big and full. It’s so quick and easy."

  • "I bought the first generation of this product way way back and I think I have used it on every mix since. In the olden days we would take a drawmer gate and set it to “duck” so we could process just that crack portion of the snare then add it into the mix. This allows me to do that in one interface with much better control."
