Alto Glockenspiel

The Alto Glockenspiel is a tuned percussion library capturing a compact 25-key alto glockenspiel. This instrument is typically used in student orchestras and has a natural range from A4 – A6, but Soundiron have extended its playable range from A-1 to G8 to allow extreme high and low notes.

Soundiron recorded the alto glockenspiel with 3 different articulations: hard mallet, soft mallet and choked. They’ve also rolled in their classic little children’s toy glockenspiel library as a bonus. Each articulation has several dynamic layers and plenty of round-robin variation to create a very dynamic and naturally playable virtual instrument.

The Alto Glockenspiel was captured from a close, dry stereo position and a far, wide position out in a large cathedral, so you’ve got two very different flavors to work with. These distinct instrument articulation and microphone sets can be independently loaded and controlled, providing you with lots of tonal and atmospheric flavors to layer and shape.

You can use the intuitive UI controls to customize the sound to your needs, with layer-specific controls for swell, attack, release, tightness, tuning, vibrato, articulation selection, an optional sub-synth waveform underlay module for tonal reinforcement. Plug them all into the step-sequencing arpeggiator and auto-roll system and you’ve got tons of options.

Contents

The custom scripted Kontakt user interface built into this library comes equipped with flexible control features, like attack, release, transient offset (tighten), dynamic swelling, vibrato, and a robust Arpeggiator system that provides a full range of custom dynamic modes and step sequencer pattern creation options.

There’s also a complete DSP effects rack, including convolution reverb with dozens of unique spaces, such as cathedrals, churches, halls, bunkers, garages, tunnels, chambers, rooms and plenty of otherworldly FX impulses to fully explore and endless variety of strange and unexpected sonic manipulations.

Circle Bells

The Circle Bells library was recorded with a rare and unique instrument called “Blossom Bells”, created by local SF Bay Area metal working artisan Pete Engelhart. This hand-welded tuned percussion instrument features six steel conical bells tuned to different keys and spread out in a fan arrangement.

Each bell has a deeply rich, warm and sonorous tone with a long sustain and crystalline clarity. Soundiron recorded them with soft mallets, hard picks and viola bow with both single-strikes/staccatos and rolls/sustains for each articulation.

Its distinctive sound evokes the feel of a steel Marimba-phone or Celeste when played with mallets and a glass harmonica when bowed, yet its character and undulating resonance defies any direct comparison to any other instrument.

The bells range in size from 2″ to 3 1/2″ in diameter and each about 10″ long. Each note can sustain for up to 10 seconds or more and carries a deep blend of beautiful overtones. Soundiron recorded each one up close in wide stereo.

It’s divided into three articulation sections: bows, mallets and picks. Soundiron used a viola bow to produce sustains and staccatos, a soft cloth mallet to play single notes and sustaining rolls and a hard pick to play single taps, scrapes and sustaining effects. All articulations feature extensive round robin variation and deep dynamic velocity layering.

Contents

Each articulation is available in a standalone preset or as part of a powerful dual-layer instrument which allows users to shape and blend any two articulations each with completely independent controls.

Every preset offers a full DSP effects rack, layer blending, tuning and envelope shaping controls. Soundiron’s advanced ARP system gives you instant adaptive arpeggiation, step-sequencing, scale/chord constraint and auto-roll functionality, with custom preset saving and loading.

You’ll also find a great selection of ambient and atmospheric FX presets, created by the Soundiron team and veteran sound designer and instrumentalist Steven Tavaglione.

Cylindrum

The Cylindrum is a massive tuned percussion instrument designed using the principle of open and closed air column resonance. The instrument was constructed by Gregg Stephens with the help of some rather involved mathematics, plenty of elbow grease and quite a few bloody fingers.

The end result is a massive 20-foot-long tuned percussion instrument with a pitch range spanning a full 4 octaves. Overall, it sounds like a strange organic synthesizer coupled with tuned tom toms. With deeply nuanced dynamic velocity layering and extensive round-robin variation, this instrument is truly an experimental percussionist’s dream come true.

Contents

The Cylindrum library contains three separate variations of the instrument: dry small, dry fat and wet. The small set is made from a series of 1½-inch diameter PVC water pipes played by tapping fingers over one end, with a microphone positioned at the far end.

The fat version is made from a series of 4-inch ABS corrugated plastic tubes with an open-ended rubber port hole, played with a ping pong paddle. Both sets were recorded in a dry studio room, giving them a full, resonant and fat tonality perfect for arpeggiated melodies and driving bass lines.

The wet version is built from 4-inch ABS corrugated plastic tubes with felt mallets on a 3/8″ heavy rubber cap, recorded in an ultra-wide stereo array in a lush glass and tile hall. This slightly more distant sound and closed port delivers a much more brutal transient impact perfect for dramatic scoring and layering with other percussion.

Multisampled Articulations:

  • 13 dry, individual 4″ open-tube impact articulations, mapped in a chromatic ensemble with 10x round-robin and up to 7 velocity layers.
  • 1 dry 1½” open-tube impact articulation, mapped in a chromatic ensemble with 30 individual notes, 2 round-robin and 20+ velocity layers.
  • 12 dry, individual 4″ tube impact mute articulations, mapped in a chromatic ensemble with 10x round-robin and up to 3 velocity layers.
  • 18 wet, individual 4″ closed-tube impact articulations, mapped in a chromatic ensemble with 10x round-robin and up to 7 velocity layers.

Powerful GUI Features:

  • 13 sound-designed atmospheric ambiences crafted from original Cylindrum content.
  • LFO system with selectable shape, target, speed, intensity, tempo-syncing and fade-in controls.
  • 12 filter types assignable to velocity, modwheel, expression, after-touch, key position and sequencer.
  • Advanced arpeggiator system.

Imbibaphones

The Imbibaphones library is a unique spin on the classic musical wine glass. The contents typically contained in wine glasses have provided inspiration for musicians since the first time the two were formally introduced.

The wine glass became popular as a musical instrument in the 18th century. Soundiron decided to interpret this concept in their own particular way. Instead of just using a set of wine goblets, they also sampled tuned percussion and resonant sustains with a martini glass, champagne flute, and after one happy accident, a broken glass.

They captured natural sustaining finger rubbed notes and soft mallet strikes for each type of glass. They then applied a variety of effects to create atmospheres, pads and effects.

Imbibaphones comes complete with a variety of GUI features to allow deep real-time performance shaping. Imbibaphones captures the complex resonances that occur during the sustaining notes of each glass as well as the full bell-like sounds of each glass being hit with a mallet.

Most sustaining notes were recorded at three different speeds which can be faded between using the modwheel. For version 2.0, they’ve fixed a variety of tuning issues and added a collection of expertly sound designed content created from the source material, featuring both short and looping articulations.

Contents

Kalimba

The Kalimba is a modernized version of the ancient African Mbira, also often called a thumb piano. It has a humble, melodious percussive plucking sound with a marimba-like warmth and tonal body. It is often used in conjunction with pianos and other tuned percussion instruments to add a sharper attack and playfulness to the sound.

Our instruments were made of wood and coconut shell, with hammered steel tines suspended over their sound holes. The notes span about an octave and a half for the smaller of Soundiron’s two instruments and over two octaves for the larger kalimba.

Soundiron recorded kalimbas in 3 different environments: Close and Dry in their studio; at medium distance in a small bright chamber; and in a large, long linear hall, at both close (1 meter) and far (15 meters) microphone distances.

They call the space “The Bunker”, because that’s exactly what it really is – a deep underground World War 1-era artillery bunker. You can also shape the room decay time easily with integrated Release control, turning the massive hall into a tight room with the twist of a knob.

Each tine was sampled with up to 11 dynamic velocity layers with up to 10X round-robin variations each to give these instruments a truly life-like sound and playability.

The Musique Box

The Musique Box is a complete collection of deeply sampled antique music boxes. Soundiron recorded 11 music boxes in different environments and configurations, from dry studio to lush concert hall, and even submerged underwater.

They then manipulated the sound to create a wide range of additional atmospheric sustains, pads and magical instruments, plus an array of tuned ambient pads, evolving atmospheres and unique dynamic FX to open up a wealth of creative possibilities right out of the box.

They’ve extended the note range to span the full scale, exposing powerfully rich bass tones and tight, percussive high notes well outside the limits of an ordinary music box. Their goal wasn’t to simply deliver the most comprehensive music box library possible, but to provide a valuable creative resource that turns these humble music boxes into heavy duty compositional power tools. Next to The Musique Box, the rest are just toys.

All of the music boxes can be easily loaded and shaped within the master preset. You can create and blend new instruments instantly in real-time, with full control over every aspect of each sound layer directly on the front panel.

This library is versatile – It can be used for a simple music box melody, or an eerie sound designed multi-layered pad. For Musique Box 2.0, Soundiron remastered the samples, added usability features with their modular template, and created 20 new custom FX presets to give you instant inspiration for your next film/video game score, soundtrack or music composition.

Water Harp

The Soundiron Waterharp is a deeply multi-sampled percussion and effects instrument library that captures the heart and soul of the waterphone. This unique instrument concept was originally developed by Richard Waters in the late 1960s.

Waterphones — also commonly known as Water Harps — are found in all shapes and sizes, but they generally follow the same basic design: a brass vessel with a hollow brass water chamber and a long neck. The top side of the chamber is adorned with vertical brass tines or bars. It is played by strumming, striking and bowing these tines, which resonate together creating darkly harmonic or dissonant tones and textures.

The tines are cut to specific lengths and arranged to create scales as they wind around the body of the waterphone. Adding water to the chamber and changing the position of the waterphone drastically changes the pitch and harmonics that are produced when the instrument is played. The water chamber itself can also be played as a percussion instrument. Overall, the waterphone can be considered as both a tuned and un-tuned percussion instrument, but is most often used in suspense and horror soundtracks and sound design as a dramatic sound effect tool.

Soundiron played it with lots of different mallets, sticks, metal rods, fingers and palms, bows and even voices to explore every nuance and hidden musical potential of this instrument. We recorded it both empty and full of water.

They even recorded it from the inside out using hydrophones (underwater microphones), while being cooked over open flame and while filled with machine screws. And finally, they created a wide selection of ambient soundscapes, pads, drones, ambiences and atmospheres using the recordings and all manner of creative sound design techniques to take this library to the next level.

Contents

Waterharp 2.0 includes automatable Attack, Release, Edge, Filter, Vibrato and Convolution reverb with 30+ custom halls, rooms and special FX impulses. They’ve optimized presets to put each category right at your fingertips, with easy articulation menu loading.

They’ve also rolled their Arpeggiator system into every tuned and strike percussion preset, with plenty of mode, sequencing and time signature options. The effects presets now feature dynamic waveform display, with real-time playback and offset cursor.

They’ve also added a new range of deep ambiences, synths and sound-designed atmospheres, all hand-crafted from the original instrument source.

Whale Drum

The Whale Drum is a modern example of one of the world’s oldest known instrument families: the tongue or slit drum. These progenitors of the “idiophone” family were originally developed in Africa thousands of years ago.

They were originally carved from hollow logs or wooden blocks and struck to produce percussive musical tones. It is one of the few instruments considered to possibly predate language itself. Over the ages, slit drums have been substantially refined to allow more accurate intonation and wider key ranges.

Soundiron selected their whale drum for its marimba-like warmth, dreamy tone, gentle softly-rounded attack and subtly undulating decay. The lower notes have an especially deep richness to them.

They recorded their 14” 8-tongued vermilion tongue drum in a dry studio environment with mallets, wooden sticks and brushes. They recorded each mallet struck note at both tongue center and edge positions with an average of 10 dynamic velocity layers and 10 round-robin variations per note.

The stick and brush articulations were played over various edges and surfaces around the drum. They then recorded a second session with the instrument in a large reverberant tile and stone hall from a slight distance with mallets and sticks. This “wet” hall sound is ideal for orchestral arrangements and more atmospheric songwriting.

As a bonus, they also recorded a smaller 3-note slit drum and a wooden toy xylophone. There is also a great bonus selection of delicate atmospheric pads and evolving ambiences sculpted from the original acoustic source material. All of these articulations and sound sets offer independent articulation layering, blending and switching right at your fingertips.

Contents

The UI comes packed with lots of great sound-shaping controls like swell, attack, release, offset, vibrato, filter, pitch (coarse & fine), articulation switching, cross-fading and layering, and so much more.

  • "The Musique Box - I love that it's not just the music box sound, but it's really a flexible sound design tool. Being able to make new ambiences, drones, and bell-like noises is really fast and intuitive. I give The Musique Box 5 out of 5 subs, it sounds great and has an easily tweakable interface to match."

  • "Noah Bells is quite a bit more than just a library of Indian bell sounds. Sound designers might well turn to it if they have to write a score with a kind of rural mid-Asian feel, but it could also be used for atmospheric creations of a more general nature, and even find its way into a commercial track or two."
