F.’em FM Synthesizer is not just one of the most powerful FM synths ever made, it’s also one of the most versatile. F-em is divided into seven different sections that control the various functions:
- (1) The Header Section offers basic instrument functions.
- (2) The Main Edit section includes lot of controls to edit a Sound Layer in detail.
- (3) The Layer Section lets you select and control the 4 Sound Layers.
- (4) On the Left Side, you find certain sub sections for controlling FM Operators, Filters, the Arpeggiator, Effects etc.
- (5) The EQ page includes a four-band equalizer, the Arp Page offers a powerful arpeggiator, the Effects Page offers four effects for each layer. The Mod Page contains an extensive modulation matrix and the Layer Page contains various options and parameters for each of the four layers.

The deep sound creation possibilities include four sound layers with eight operators each, that offer typical analog waveforms and separate pitch and level LFOs as well as pitch and level envelopes.
There are two additional sample oscillators and a white and pink noise generator. Followed by two serial multimode filters and a four-band equalizer with shelf and bell curves.
Each layer can be mixed into four effect busses, each featuring a sum overdrive, a compressor, a modulation effect like chorus, flanger, phaser or sum filter, and a space effect like delay or clocked delay, or natural, plate or non-linear reverb.

For the money, incredible – $29 (or $33 after conversion) down from $179 … it sounds good – honestly, the presets are nothing terribly different from other FM synths I have – but the capacity to tweak is what makes it special … if you’re willing to spend the time you can come up with something unique … so for that its worth the $29 (or euros or whichever – hey, VST Buzz – start pricing things in $ please – arturia and every one else charges $29/29 euros!)

F ‘Em sounds great. 4 full layers, fully flexible carrier and operator routing, and plenty of idiomatic factory patches to introduce beginners to FM synthesis. There are other options on the market if DX7 emulation is your goal, but for $29, this is a winner.

Good 8 operator FM synth- has extras for layering other synthesis types with an FM synth- which sets it apart from other older and newer FM synth VSTs on the market (2023). A good value if you love FM synthesis, know how to program FM, and desire those extra synth layers- otherwise there are other VSTs that are easier to work with (for only FM synthesis). Really like that this one has free run mode for the operators and subtractive Filters with drive- very thoughtful additions that can make quite a difference.
