Unlock The Power Of “Orchestral Dust” With The Simple To Use Interface!

Sound Selection & Playback Menus

At the top of the MAIN tab you will see four buttons, two for each sound source. The first and third buttons lets you select a sound from those included in Orchestral Dust(V1.5). Click on one of these buttons and Orchestral Dust(V1.5) will display the Sound Browser.

The Sound Browser will say which class of voice you are working with (top left), and list the categories of sounds included in Orchestral Dust(V1.5). Each category has a number of subcategories for each instrument in that class and each sub-category has a number of alphabetically listed sounds.

Select a category, sub-category and sound, then press LOAD (top right) and Orchestral Dust(V1.5) will load the sound into its granular engine.

Next to the Sound Selectors are the Play Back Menus. Here you can tell Orchestral Dust(V1.5) how you want the sounds to be played:

  • GRAIN – Orchestral Dust(V1.5) will use the Granular engine – and all its controls to play the sound
  • HYBRID – Orchestral Dust(V1.5) will play the sound using the granular engine, and at the same time will also play the sound from start to finish once
  • ONE SHOT – Orchestral Dust(V1.5) will play the sound “once through” very much like a “classic” ROMpler

Shape

The shape tab allows you to set up the dedicated filter for each voice, you can select lo-pass, band-pass or hi-pass filter.

You can also set up the LFO used for filter frequency. You can select Sine, Saw, Square or random LFO shapes.

Sound Shaping

Below the Sound Selection and play back buttons are the sound shaping buttons. Selecting each of these will show you a dedicated set of sound-shaping controls.

Voices

Voices controls overall Volume, Pan and Pitch of each voice, and includes the innovative Scene Management tool and the overall Sound Drift control.

Settings

The Settings tab allows you to define the Change Controllers you wish to use with Orchestral Dust(V1.5).

The Voice CC assignments will modulate each voices Gain and Position table. So you could use this to apply CC-based crescendos, or change the position of the play-head to get cc-based changes in timbre.

Learn more in-depth details about all these features in the Manual HERE.

Let Your Creativity Run Wild With Granular Controls & Scene Morphing!

Scene Management

The Scene Management provides three scenes (denoted by the three circles along the top Mix axis). In each scene you can set a value for any Volume, Pitch or Pan control and the Scene Management will morph between each scene – moving between the Volume, Pan or Pitch settings you have made.

Setting up a Scene

Click on one of the scene circle buttons and Orchestral Dust(V1.5) will move to that scene (you must be on a scene to set any values). Click on the circle next to the lower “Mix” – to put Orchestral Dust(V1.5) into Scene recording mode – and move any volume pan or pitch control – Orchestral Dust(V1.5) will write these new positions into the scene. When you are done un-click the lower Mix circle, to turn off recording mode. Now you can move the scene slider and Orchestral Dust(V1.5) will morph between the scenes you set up.

Walking

Click the “Walk” button and Orchestral Dust(V1.5) will randomly move around the scene slider giving you endlessly changing volume, pitch and pan settings. Remember you dont have to have all the Volume, Pan or Pitch controls included – Orchestral Dust(V1.5) will only target those controls with the Circle button turned on.

Drift

The Drift control will set how much pitch drifing (old fashioned synth bahaviour) that Orchestral Dust(V1.5) wil develop.

Control

The Control tab looks the most complex, but its pretty easy to work with. This interface is set up to manage the granular engine. First for each voice are a set of horizontal sliders:

  • ATTACK – sets the attack of each individual grain
  • RELEASE – sets the release of each individual grain, which can affect the overall release time of the sound too.
  • SMOOTHING – Manages a number of parameters including grain length, and the speed of movement of the play head, higher values give a smoother sound

Beneath these sliders is the horizontal model slider – with 8 settings. This sets the octave playback model used.

Set to 1 Orchestral Dust(V1.5) will play each grain at its default pitch, settings further up randomly sets the grain pitch up 1 or 2 octaves, or down 1 or 2 octaves.

In the centre is the Jitter slider which applies to both voices – this adds a time between each grain playback so you can get jittering sounds.

Below these sliders are the tables dedicated to Gain, Position and Pitch. Each of these is “read” by Orchestral Dust and dictates the volume, position in the audio file and the pitch change amount applied to each individual grain. Below the tables are:

  • Loop – set a loop position in the Gain
  • Position and Pitch tables – you dont need to “go back to the begining of the table” in sustained notes, allowing you to build sounds that differ between their initial onset sound and their sustained playback
  • Steps – sets the number of steps in the tables.

Sends

The Sends tab allows you to set up how much of each voice is sent to each of the 4 Orchestral Dust(V1.5) dedicated Send effect slots, which are discussed in the next section.

The Final Touch – Effects & Gating!

Gates

Orchestral Dust(V1.5) has 2 independent rhythmic gates, one per voice.

Each Gate has the same control set. At the top of each gate you can turn each gate on or off, and set its destination. There are 9 different destinations for each gate:

  • Vol(Gain) – a “classic” trance gate
  • LoPass(Freq) – a gate that uses a low pass filter and sets the filter frequency
  • HiPass(Freq) – a gate that uses a high pass filter and sets the filter frequency
  • BandPass(Freq) – a gate that uses a band pass filter and sets the filter frequency
  • Dist(Drive) – a gate that uses a distortion and sets the Distrotion Drive amount
  • LoFi(Bits) – a gate that uses a LoFi FX and sets the Bit Level
  • Formant(talk) – a gate that uses a Formant filter and sets the filter Talk amount
  • Skreamer – an amp simulator with control over the Drive
  • Rotator – a rotating speaker effect with control over the mix of signal dry/wet

Under these controls are control for the following:

  • Tempo – set the speed the gate runs at
  • Steps – sets the number of steps in the gate
  • Retrigger – the gate will restart each time a new note is played
  • Envelope – enhances each step in the gate

To the right of these controls are the Gate tables themselves where you can set individual values. Finally at the top are the load/save buttons to load and save Gate presets.

Sends

The Sends page allows you to set four different send effects. Each slot allows you to select any of the available effects:

  • Reverb
  • Delay
  • Chorus
  • Flanger
  • Phaser
  • Convolution

Click on an effect name to load that effect into its slot or to turn off effects in that slot. Once an effect is loaded you can set the parameters for that effect in its panel.

The amount of audio sent to each effect in each slot is set using the Send controls on the MAIN page.

Effects

Orchestral Dust(V1.5) has four independent effect slots for each voice.

In the effects tab you will see you can select each voice and then in each slot you can select one of 20 different effects. Selected and loaded effects will only be applied to the selected Voice.

When you have selected an effect it will be loaded into the slot and its parameters will be displayed, and you can make changes as you wish to these.
