Beautiful Hammered Dulcimer with a Rich & Sweet Sound
Charles’ Dulcimer is a beautiful Hammer Dulcimer made of solid wood with 9 courses of strings on the treble bridge and 8 courses of strings on the bass bridge, recorded by Luis Filip Costa. It has two octaves and a sweet, rich and resonating sound.
The instrument was extensively sampled with three different mic positions: a close perspective, a room and an ambient/hall perspective at the Coomberhust Studio Concert Hall at Kingston University.
3 Microphone Positions to Choose From – Close, Room & Ambient
Charles’ Dulcimer was sampled with three different mic positions: a close perspective, a room and an ambient/hall perspective. The Close perspective consists of a pair of cardiods (Shure SM57) spaced about 1 to 2 feet apart facing down about two inches away from the dulcimer. With this perspective I intended to get a very detailed and clear recording, a clear first attack of the note, the string and hammer noise.
The Room perspective is an X/Y configuration of small diaphragm condensers (AKG C1000) for at about 3 feet away from the instrument, placing the instrument in a room while still managing to get a clean, bright sound due to the sensitive nature of the condenser microphones.
The Ambient perspective is a Large diaphragm dynamic microphone (Sennheiser MD421) placed 6 to 8 feet away from the instrument to capture the sound of the hall and the tail/decay of the instrument.
