The Idea Behind Lyrical Cello Phrases

Sonuscore were given a challenge by a group of composers: they challenged them to build a cello tool to take their compositional process to a whole new level: these composers not only wanted their needs taken care of, they also asked Sonuscore to find a way to leverage the strengths a real instrumentalist brings to the table.

Sonuscore asked their composers what they look for in a new instrument. They told them they need high quality sound, they need their work-flow to be at the speed of their thoughts or faster and, best case scenario, that these instruments inspire new creative ideas.

“Lyrical Cello Phrases” is exactly the best of both worlds: it combines the creative freedom a composer enjoys with the expressivity and emotionality a real instrumentalist sets free – all at your fingertips.

The Phrase Instrument

The themes were all played by Sonuscore’s cellist of choice Mátyás Ölveti (recorded for “The Elder Scrolls Online”) whose improvisatorial talent brought out the strengths of the cello full throttle.

With over 70 freely combinable phrases spread over 10 themes throughout all keys as well as 2 additional bonus themes this library is a tool that empowers every creative composer to get the project off of the ground with an impact.

THE MAIN PAGE INTERFACE

On the main page you can select a theme and access all the basic functions you need to get started.

• Theme Selection Bar: On the left side of the main page are twelve themes that you can choose from. Simply click on the button on the left side of each title to activate a theme.
• Phrase System: Each theme consists of five complete phrases. All phrases can be played as a whole or the opening, middle and endings of each phrase can be combined freely to create new phrases. As an addition Sonuscore created short endings that will take you back to the root at any time.

• Phrase Progress Bar: The Phrase Progress Bar shows the waveform of the current phrase and the playback position the phrase is in.
• Page Selection: On the bottom of the GUI you can find the Main and FX page buttons. Use those to navigate between the two pages.
• Playback Speed: The speed knob allows you to change the playback speed of the phrases. It goes from a minimum of 50% up to 150% of the original speed.

THE FX PAGE INTERFACE

On the FX page you can access the advanced functions of the EQ, DELAY and REVERB settings.

Equalizer:

• EQ ON/OFF: Toggles the equalizer on and off.
• LOW: Adjusts the gain of the low frequency band.
• LMF: Adjusts the gain of the low-mid frequency band.
• HMF: Adjusts the gain of the high-mid frequency band.
• HIGH: Adjusts the gain of the high frequency band.

Delay:

• DELAY ON/OFF: Toggles the equalizer on and off.
• UNIT: Selects the UNIT of the TIME parameter in note values.
• TIME: Selects the TIME after which the delayed signal will repeat.
• FEEDBACK: Adjusts the FEEDBACK amount of the DELAY effect.
• SEND: Adjusts the send level of the DELAY effect.

Reverb:

• REVERB ON/OFF: Toggles the REVERB on and off.
• IR MENU: Choose one of four impulse responses. You can select two large and two small halls.
• PREDELAY: Adjusts the PREDELAY of the REVERB effect in ms.
• SEND: Adjusts the send level of the REVERB.

Besides the selection of these hand-crafted themes the “Lyrical Cello Phrases” includes a legato instrument so you can play the melodies that come to you freely with two different note-lengths to chose from.

The Legato Instrument

When opening the “Lyrical Cello Legato.nki” you have all the controls you need right there in the GUI.

THE INTERFACE

• Keyswitches: There are two different legato types that you can choose from. Combine them to create a perfect balance of expressive longer legato and a shorter legato for faster lines. On the bottom of the GUI you can see which legato type is currently active.
