What Is Virtual Guitarist SILK?
“Virtual Guitarist SILK” is a software instrument doubling as a professional guitarist in a music studio, with you being in the producer’s chair.
Virtual Guitarist vs A Real Guitarist
If we denied the huge differences between a software plugin and a real guitarist, you wouldn’t trust us. If you have all the money, time and patience in the world plus a recording studio and a professional guitarist available, we would always recommend: Go for it!
But for most people, most of the time, that’s not the case:
- Maybe you have no access to a (professional) guitarist.
- Maybe you want to just work out ideas totally by yourself.
- Maybe you’re a guitarist but want to quickly lay down a track without the hassle of setting up.
- Maybe you want to use MIDI-controlled guitar tracks as source material for electronic manipulation.
In these and many other scenarios, “Virtual Guitarist SILK” is a great alternative to the real thing.
What is “SILK” about?
“Virtual Guitarist SILK” is a concert guitar accompaniment virtuoso. From delicate, strings-only singer/songwriter arrangements to vivid dance and pop ornaments, SILK enables a wide range of styles in your production’s sonic color palette.
Why so few controls?
Ujam are all musicians and they know that the time for learning a user interface is better spent making music. Therefore, the user interface of Virtual Guitarist SILK is designed for maximum ease of use and minimum distraction.
It is also fail-proof in that no matter how you set up the controls of Virtual Guitarist SILK, the result will never be musically or technically wrong – without sacrificing any creative freedom. You can trust in the fact that tracks produced with Virtual Guitarist SILK are realistic, professionally produced guitar tracks.
Start Playing!
The top half of the Virtual Guitarist SILK window is dedicated to the guitarist’s performance – in other words: How he plays. Here, you’ll find two musical core aspects you can control: Phrasing and Notes.
The Interactive Keyboard is split between a Phrase Range (left), Bass Notes (middle), and a Chord Range (right). The basic principle is simple:
- When you press keys from C4* upwards, Virtual Guitarist SILK will start playing a phrase with the chord determined by the notes you play. When you release the key(s), playback will stop.
- MIDI notes below C3 don’t represent musical keys but switches varying the phrasing of your player in real-time. This is a powerful way of making your performance interesting and dynamic.
- By turning up the Modulation Wheel, you can morph from normal to shorter to dead notes – another powerful way of varying phrases.
- Play with the Pitch Wheel to control the playing intensity – very powerful to let the guitar follow the song’s arc.
- MIDI notes between C3 and B3 let you select the Bass Note to play along with the chord.
If you know these things and can switch presets, you know all you need to start producing with Virtual Guitarist SILK.
*C4 is one octave above middle C. The MIDI note number is 72. Some DAWs refer to it as C5.

Find Your Guitar Sound
Virtual Guitarist SILK’s sonic secret is very simple! By choosing to record a mint condition 1967 German nylon-stringed concert guitar, made by a renowned luthier with an amazing session musician at the helm, UJAM Instruments have created a virtual instrument even top composers and musicians will find hard to tell apart from the real thing.
Guitar Controls
Position – This control emulates moving the picking hand between bridge and neck that provides control over sound aspects that create a realistic feel such as play position and fret noises.
Doubling – Activating this button has the same effect as if two guitarists played your track at the same time, with minimal variations. Technically, Doubling adds a second guitarist with a separate amp setup and places both at the outer positions of the stereo spectrum.
Character – Lets you choose from five sophisticated microphone and channel strip combinations, giving you lots of sonic options.
Mics – Lets you choose between five different selections of high-end small-diaphragm condenser microphones, giving you maximum sonic options.
Smooth & Elegant Accompaniments
Perfect your tone with UJAM Instruments very own high-quality integrated amp modeling with sounds based on handpicked vintage amps and speaker cabinets. Add the final polish with classic guitar effects including great sounding delay, chorus and reverb.
MIDI Learn
Using MIDI Learn, you can assign Virtual Guitarist SILK controls to controls on your hardware keyboard that send MIDI controller data. To assign a control, you usually right-click or ctrl-click a control in Virtual Guitarist SILK to open the MIDI Learn context menu of your DAW.

"This is a great instrument for non-guitar playing songwriters (like me). Silk makes it easy to add and edit nylon string guitar parts to your songs as you are developing them. And the sound shaping parameters give you everything you need to use these parts in a finished mix. It's absolutely worth checking out."

This is an amazing product. It has real sounding guitar sounds and It`s really easy to use. A must have for composers and producers.
Stefan – :
The Sound is really great and I would compare it most likely to Realitone Fingerpick with the difference that
the Realitone Fingerpick has a Steel String guitar as well. Ujam Silk is a Nylon only.
But in terms of flexibilty of the rhythm styles an availiable variations, the Ujam Slik Guitar is fantastic.
It has many options to adjust the sound and put variation to the strumming or picking.
Th only thing I am missing is a feature that is inside of Ujam Sparkle, which I also own. I can use the CC11 Expression Pedal to control the overall velocity, which is nice. In Silk there is no such way. But… it is really nice that Modwheel and Pitchbend are used to blend between Mute and unmuted sound (Modwhell) and hard string touch (Pitchbend). Good guitar. Maybe they put a feature to a future version (CC11 – I wish) or even a solo Guitar – which they did on the Mellow Bass!

AT the discounted price it is a great deal. It has limitations and some features are missing but can be worked around. Worth a purchase overall though.
Lloyd – :
I’ve gotta say… this is a fantastic sounding product. There are so many different patterns you can play and realistic sounding variations. I spent way too much time listening to other people playing with it in YouTube videos instead of just downloading the trial version and discovering how versatile it is for myself. It’s filled with inspiring content which you can make your own. My only wish was that there was a standalone version also, so that I could play around with it without having to launch my DAW… but on the other hand, it is most sensible to work with this while recording MIDI so that you can jam out some cool stuff while you explore and then easily fix mistakes and build on things later.
I’m seriously impressed with all the UJAM virtual guitars. They are really well done, and I think this company really has something special going on. Great customer service too.
Masanori – :
Pristine Nylon sound. Its sound and moderate dynamics level is very spot-on for fast pop music idea rendering in MIDI. I would like it better if silk has more variations of sounds based on the guitar itself: like “really Classical music sounding” ” JAZZ sounding” “Latin sounding” “Spanish sounding” etc. sampling form many body models from various famous guitar makers in those different genres. I would expect those variations on version 2. But overall Silk version 1 sounds very good and clean.
